Lauren Alkire
Lauren Alkire was born February 5, 1981 in Seattle, Washington. By the age of four she started to learn to ski as a “Powder Pig” at Ski Acres on Snoqualmie Pass. Learning how to ski on family vacations, she quickly found herself being harassed by ski patrol. By the age of 12 she got caught going through the “snowboarders only” terrain park at Stevens Pass, and other Northwest areas. Of course she disregarded their demands; why should those fun jumps be only for knuckle-draggers? She would shout be back.
Soccer consumed her life during the bleak grey years of high school. Upon graduating, as a Bulldog from Garfield High school in 1999, a move to Telluride, Colorado for a year off school as a ski bum seemed like a good idea. The first powder day of her life had her hooked. Four years later, after success at competitions even beating out some knuckle-draggers in the park she moved to Summit County. There she attended Colorado Mountain College and skied various resorts during the 2003-04 ski season. It was during this season that the U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championship brought her to Crested Butte, Colorado.
After careful consideration, Lauren decided that Crested Butte would be the best place to continue her skiing career while at the same time acquiring her bachelor’s degree from Western State College. Graduating in December of this year she can’t wait to be done with school and devote her time to more skiing. The last two seasons have proved trying, with school and work getting in the way of having fun. During the summer of 2005, Lauren studied abroad in Valparaíso, Chile. After her five week program, she set off, traveling on her own into the unfamiliar areas of Chile and Argentina. While acquiring a strong conversational ability in Spanish (the greatest learning assistant—Argentinean wines) she tested her skiing prowess on the southern slopes of Bariloche and Las Leñas.
This year will be about fun, new adventures, and winning, while riding for the Colorado FreeSkier shop team. Lauren is a dedicated athlete who is willing to go that extra step for her ski career and sponsors. We are very honored to have her as a part of our team and a representative of our shop.
